I have three girls (22, 20, 16) and I get to hear endless discussions on the impact of this video or that song and which are offensive to women and how some use cultural appropriation. It’s kind of fun to tear things apart and analyze them or listen to my daughters. They’re all feminists, but all have different points of view. This one brought the comments of why do we have to put down “skinny bitches” to celebrate women of a different size. The other comment is “who cares what men want to grab at night.” My comment is more what Dick Clark would get from me, “I’d give it a 90, because it’s easy to dance to.”
If you really want to have some fun at my dinner table, mention that you think Blurred Lines is really catchy and fun. It’s like BOOM within three seconds.
On the skinny bitches line-the next line of the lyric is literally taking that back. The next 3 lines:
“No I’m just playing. I know you think you’re fat
“But I’m here to tell ya
“Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top”
She’s saying even the women most of us would think of as skinny don’t think of themselves as skinny. Society tells all women that their bodies are wrong in some way.
