The Worst School In New York City

A couple of days ago, the New York Post reported on severe mismanagement of a school in the Rockaways in Queens.  Among the problems the school, there is no gym, no art class, no special ed teacher, no new textbooks, no substitute teachers. Kindergarten students are in a rat infested room. The principal doesn’t show up at the school until 3:30 in the afternoon.

In response to the New York Post’s story and the resulting news crush from local news sources, the chancellor sent someone into the school to talk to the principal. According to the Huffington Post,

On Monday night New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña issued a statement regarding the conditions of PS 106. After speaking with Deputy Chancellor Dorita Gibson, Fariña said that “there is significant room for organizational improvement [at PS 106], but that classrooms are orderly, teachers are dedicated, and students are learning.” She said that going forward, Department of Education officials will regularly visit the school to make sure organizational changes are being implemented.

In other words, nothing will change.

That principal should have been fired immediately. The school administration should not have learned about problems from a newspaper. As long as the kids aren’t rioting in the hallways, everybody is pretty much content with mismanagement, incompetence, and stupidity.

  1. Saying “That principal should have been fired immediately” is a wild fantasy. The union makes it impossible to fire anyone immediately, ever, for anything. It doesn’t make sense to advocate strong public sector unions and then demand that management to take decisive employment actions. You have to choose one or the other, and the Democratic urban machines have made their choice.

  2. If the de Blasio administration gets in the habit of firing someone every time Murdoch does a hit piece, they’ll end up like the Paterson administration.
