I voted for Chris Christie’s opponent last night. Poor Barbara Buono. She never had a chance. She had a miniscule budget and no name recognition. Christie is way too popular in New Jersey, even among Democrats. Hard-core Newark union leaders tell me (off the record) that they like Christie.
He isn’t terribly ideological. I’ve never heard him talk about social issues. He isn’t a tea partier. He was nice to Obama when he needed to be. He like Bruce Springsteen. He talks like he’s from Jersey. In a state full of extremely dirty politics, he managed to not get caught up in that garbage. People don’t hate him here.
But everyone is afraid that if he gets into national politics, he will stop being our self-depreciating, canoli-eating, moderate Republican governor. Once he starts making trips to Iowa, he’ll morph into Ted Cruz or Michelle Bachmann. I’m not confident that a Christie-Republican can win outside of New Jersey.

We just pointed out this morning that we didn’t know who had run against Christie, though we would have voted for whoever it was if we lived in NJ, too.
I wouldn’t like even the “self-deprecating, canoli-eating, bruce springsteen-loving Christie”, but wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if he were to remain true to himself while running across the country (and not twist in the tea-party wind like both McCain and Romney did in the end). I think big corporate/business interests are going to get behind someone like Christie — will their money be enough to win him the Republican nomination? And, can he do so (with their money) without spoiling his chance of attracting the middle (including the non-ideological ethnic minorities, like the Asians?).

Let’s make a trade: you can have de Blasio, we’ll take Christie.

This is very shallow, but Christie’s weight is against him. He looks like a heart attack in a suit.
And cosmetically, it doesn’t matter if he loses weight–the sad fact is that people tend to hold onto a lot of weight in their faces, so he’s going to continue looking fat even if he loses substantial weight.
Also, even more shallowly, he has a number of chubby children.

Yeah, I don’t think Laura will take that one. (Even if she would, her neighbors wouldn’t.)

It’s an annoying thing about this comment software that sometimes the Reply function works; other times the intended reply shows up as a separate comment at the end. Anyway, my comment above is a reply to Dr. Manhattan.

75% v 25% is a huge margin. I guess Bloomberg’s last election at 50/46 wasn’t a particularly big margin, but still seems like a major shift to go from that to 75% for de Blasio.

Our new mayor won 84% of the vote, but his challenger really hurt his chances by selling his house and moving his family to Israel after the primary.
