New York City has a packed field running for mayor. Since we’re in the New York City media market, we know more about New York City politics than what’s going on in Trenton. New Jersey doesn’t really have its own media, which is a problem for a whole lot of reasons that aren’t relevant to this blog post. The race has been fascinating in part because there’s the whole Anthony Weiner angle and also because of the amazing use of campaign ads.
Bill deBlasio was a complete unknown until he started running ads that featured his awesome son.
The kid has a great Afro and seems very relatable. He reminds me of Jonah. Thanks to the kid, deBlasio is now a front runner and Afros are all the rage.
Christine Quinn is the establishment favorite. She’s been endorsed by all the major papers, as her ads make sure to point out. She tells us that we SHOULD vote for her. Nobody likes to be told who they SHOULD vote for.
The worst ad award has to go to Anthony Weiner. Look at his head bob and weave with the mute button on.
A vote for Weiner is a vote for Slytherin.

Does Weiner still have money to run his ads on TV?

I just came from dinner at the new campus cafeteria, where I saw a ginger college student wearing a t-shirt that said something like, “Do Not Expose To Sunlight.”

One of Saki’s most awesome stories is Filboid Studge, about a dreadful breakfast cereal and a successful ad campaign which made eating it a duty. Quinn is the Filboid Studge candidate: everyone thinks she’s an asshole, but, your betters, sense of duty… that’s why Weiner rose so far so fast, because people saw an escape from the gray future with Quinn. Bill deB the same, escape from the grim Quinn. I suspect New York will regret marrying the guy – he is associated with Acorn, and they can’t afford to send all the rich packing.
It may be that I am predisposed to think this way because we had in Arlington a Filboid Studge candidate, many dutiful yard signs for Melissa Bondi, and then when it looked possible to elect someone else, mass defection to Libby Garvey, who ultimately won.
