Saturday was Jonah’s 14th birthday. In the morning, after a quick trip through the old photo albums (sniff), Ian and Steve and I ditched Jonah to do some birthday present shopping. While Steve and I only had a vague idea of what to get for him, Ian woke up with an exact plan. He wanted to get Jonah a DVD of “Adventure Time”
“Adventure Time” is an LSD trip of a cartoon that the boys love. They trade lines from the cartoons, like Steve and my brother trade lines from Caddyshack. It’s their inside joke. I never watch the show with them, so I have no idea what they’re laughing about, but that’s okay.
Ian marched into Barnes and Noble with his box of gift cards and proudly walked out with his present for his brother. We came home and immediately wrapped it up together.
Later, we went to watch Jonah’s last soccer match of the season.
ooh, look at that nice slate roof near the field…
Jonah played well, but not as well as he would have liked. Combined with some other 14-year old drama, Jonah was having the worst birthday ever.
By the time we got to the cake and present part of the evening…
Jonah looked like this…
We sang the birthday song, and Ian handed Jonah his presents one by one. Jonah gradually got happier. Ian saved his gift for Jonah until the end.
Here you go, Jonah!
Jonah opens the present and starts laughing. The first laugh all day.
He laughs so hard that he starts crying.
The video came with a hat.
Ian helps Jonah push back his “luscious” hair.
Birthday is rescued.
Two brothers. One watches a silly cartoon, because his younger brother loves it. The other brother spends his own money to make his brother’s day special.

I love this story.

I read this when you posted it, but didn’t comment. What a beautiful post! My boys fight a lot, but I hope that they will always love each other and stand by each other.

I love the blog’s new looks.
P.S. wordpress won’t let me post comments soon after each other. It tells me to slow down. Blah… they shouldn’t chide me for commenting fast! who do they think they are? 😉
