Making Shit Up

Tom Kreider writes about how audiences want writers to be smart and expert, but really they are just making shit up.

Alicia’s an artist, too, and understands how audiences tend to ascribe magisterial intention and control to artists, when more often we’re just making it up as we go, doing the best we can by deadline.

  1. It’s certainly true that the higher you go in the ranks of technologists, the more likely people are to say they don’t know. At my office we actually use this to weed people out in the hiring process; ask questions until a person quite obviously can’t know, then see how long it takes for them to fess up to it. Says a lot about a person and their confidence and maturity.
