Writing Tips

I took this week to read a bunch of random things and come up with new ideas.

I wasn't happy with the types of things that I've been publishing lately. Too journalistic-y. Straight journalism isn't a practical career choice for me. The field is crowded with too many 20-somethings living and working in DC or NYC, and I'm not there. It doesn't pay enough, and it isn't my strength. Essays bring me more joy, so I'm writing something long and rambling that brings in some of the reading that I've been doing lately –Young Adult dystopian novels. It's fun enough to justify the crappy money.

I meandered over to Veronica Roth's blog this morning. She's the author of Divergent and Insurgence, two books that I read this week. She has some useful writing advice that could apply to non-fiction topics, too. And I see she uses my favorite writing software, Scrivener.

  1. I realized that I am unreasonably mad at Roth right now, ’cause I hate waiting for books in series. Usually I just wait until they are all done before reading the first one, but stumbled on this series and read it before I realized the others weren’t available. As I grow older, my mind doesn’t retain enough information to keep reading a series a year + after the last book.
Am also annoyed at the person writing the Prism series.
(and, I don’t love either of these books, I just can’t read them over the course of multiple years).

  2. I have got to get on this Scrivener bandwagon. I’m so technology-averse, but I think it would really help me with this second novel. Thanks for reminding me about it.

  3. What is so good about Scrivener?
I have to say, whatever you want to do with your blog, I really enjoy it as is.

  4. I loved Divergent – it had me wondering why The Hunger Games seems so much more popular. Divergent is the better book, but then again, I’m not a tween so what do I know. I’ll read Roth’s 2nd and 3rd books together whenever the 3rd comes out.

  5. Thanks, Artemia. This blog will continue as it is. Random, typo-filled, half dashed off thoughts. I spend most of my mornings working on turning some of these ideas into something that I get published in the Atlantic or elsewhere. I haven’t been happy with those more professional pieces. I hate trying to pysch out the editors and send them pitches. I like writing, but I hate pitches. I also need to write stuff that any 20 year old can churn out.
