Aaron Swartz was sort of a hero to many of the ancient blogger types like me. His subversive attitude towards information, his early grasp of the potential of the Internet, and his mad programming skillz always made him one to watch.
He committed suicide yesterday. Although I never met him, I am devastated.
Swartz was committed to freeing research from academic paywalls. I share that commitment.
An Atlantic article that I wrote a year ago on this topic — Locked in the Ivory Tower — Why JSTOR Imprisons Academic Research.

It’s truly heartbreaking. I particularly liked Cory Doctorow’s response to the news: http://boingboing.net/2013/01/12/rip-aaron-swartz.html
