As Ian munched on his waffles this morning, I babbled while making a list of food that we needed from the supermarket. When Ian couldn't talk, we talked constantly for a few years until he got the hang of it. That habit of constant speech stuck, and now I talk to myself like an insane person.
"Yogurt. Granola. Eggs. Cheese. Ian, I need a lot of thing from the grocery store."
Ian picked his head up from his breakfast and said, "The grocery store. You have to go to the GROSS-ery store? You have to buy gross stuff? Eeeew. That's yucky!" Then he laughed at his own joke until tears came out of eyes.
There are scientists who say that kids on the spectrum are incapable of having a sense of humor and lack creativity. Those scientists are GROSS.

Loved the link. I have a couple of friends whose kids have some major issues, and one thing I’ve noticed is how GROUNDED they are, while everyone else is freaking out about the gifted program and college admissions. One of these moms told me: I always hear all this and frankly after a year in the hospital, I’m just glad my kid’s ALIVE. Not too worried about anyone not making travel soccer.
Kind of puts it all in perspective.

On Parenthood next season, Max is going to middle school, and the stuff I read about it is nightmare-inducing (for me). But I asked my daughter how she thought E would fare in middle school and she said, “He’s funny, so he’ll be ok.” His humor is very word-based, too. He’ll hear a word and make an association to its literal meaning.

There is the possibility of being so socially obtuse that middle school is relatively painless. (That’s if there isn’t any physical violence to deal with, of course.)
