It's that time of the year when I get itchy for adventure.

We're due to visit my in-laws in the Outer Banks this summer. We usually break up the trip down there with adventures in coastal towns in Delaware and romps through the mountains of Virginia. The New York Times has some great websites to help me plan.

They recommend Designtripper. I need to spend some quantity time on that website.

National Geographic's profile of the Outer Banks is fabulous.

  1. If I can brag about my summer trips….
Our family trip is to Pennsylvania (Philly, Amish country, Hershey, Gettysburg). I get to relive my childhood because our trips were all within 5-hour drives of New York City.
But most exciting, it’s my 20th wedding anniversary next week, so I managed to talk my mom into taking the kids for a week in August (long story) and my husband and I are taking a week-long trip alone to Berlin. Why Berlin? There was a cheap airfare. 🙂 I will take suggestions on places to visit while we’re there.

  2. Wow! Berlin is someplace I’ve aways wanted to go. No suggestions, but everyone I know whose spent time there loves the city.
This summer I am visiting my boyfriend’s family north of Venice for about a month and and my Godmother in Cologne for a week, so I can’t be complaining about anything. My boyfriend and I are going to have two 24 hour layovers in Istanbul (this was how the cheapest out). If anyone has any ideas what to do with <24 hours in Istanbul that is not too expensive I would love to know. (Also, to get to Cologne from Venice I'm probably going to fly Ryanair to Frankfurt and then take the train to Cologne, but if people have good advice for cheap intra-European travel I would appreciate that as well…)

  3. oooh, we’re in the mountains of VA (for most of June), let us know if you stop in our area!
We’re going to Brazil this summer and I’ll get to visit the beautiful coastal city of Maceió, in the state of Alagoas where my in-laws have a newly renovated apartment. They are famous for their natural pools in the reefs and sandbanks off shore. I’m really excited about that!
