Do you watch Parks & Rec, Laura? I’ve become addicted to it this season after really being unhappy with the first season. They’ve shifted focus to stop making fun of Leslie and instead see her as, to quote this week’s episode, a goddess. In terms of tv trendiness, it’s:
In: Parks & Rec
5 minutes ago: Modern Family
Out: The Office
Will Ferrell has been really terrible on The Office, especially in his introductory episode. I couldn’t even finish watching that one. He has no chemistry with Steve Carell’s character. I have no idea what they wanted his presence to accomplish. He’s horribly miscast, or just phoning it in.
Parks and Rec is much better than The Office right now, even with some real clunker characters. I like Andy the loser, April, Ann the goth, Leslie and Ron Swanson (as well as his wife the evil librarian) and the health freak big boss is tolerable, but I can’t stand Tom Haverford (the cute but tiny and pathetic South Asian wannabe player) and Donna the black female stereotype (she has so little real individuality and plot function that I had to look up her name). Tom Haverford is just painful, but Donna is really insulting as a character. She’s fat, sassy, lusty and drives a Mercedes, and that’s about it. I bet the writers were really proud of themselves for breaking out of the box and not making it a big shiny black Escalade.
So Ben (Leslie’s potential love interest) isn’t registering on your radar? “Yeah, there’s like a 30% chance they’ll both die.”
Aw, I love Tom. Donna I have no opinion on.
My favorite part of this week’s Office was when Dwight and Jim looked at each other, and Dwight said, Uh oh.
I’m one episode behind on both shows right now. [covers ears]
Ben’s been emerging as a character, but it’s taken a while for him to individuate himself from the Ben/Chris borg. I take it that the show is planning on having Leslie restore Ben’s faith in local government. While I can see what Ben gets from Leslie (her boundless optimism and energy), it’s less clear what Leslie has to learn from Ben. I like Leslie/Ron a lot better than Leslie/Ben.
Does it wreck things that in real life it really would be time to lay off at least several of the Parks and Rec employees? We haven’t heard much about budget shortfalls lately, but the office is clearly over-staffed. I think things would work pretty well with just Leslie and Ben and maybe one more person as a receptionist.
By the way, I loved the flu episode on Parks and Rec.
