I just met my writing goal for the day. Wahoo. A draft of Chapter One is finished. It may suck. I probably sucks. But it's done.
I need a reward for myself. It's too early to liquid rewards, so I may have to reward myself with a burger. That's good, too.
Question of the Day: How do you reward yourself?

Except that it is Friday, bacon is a good reward.

I know. I just remembered. Sigh. Grilled cheese it is, then.

I suggest collecting bacon fat from over the week in a jar and storing it in the fridge, and then rewarding yourself on Friday with a spoonful.

Now that the school thing seems to be doing well, I’m starting to explore the possibility of doing Russian tutoring on campus. My husband ordered me the elementary textbook they use here and it was sitting on my table for a few days untouched, until I realized that I needed to leave home in order to put in some concentrated effort. I go to Starbucks once a day anyway, so it’s just a question of sitting down and working there. For two days running, I’ve gone to Starbucks with the book and a pencil and reviewed elementary Russian until the smoke starts coming out of my ears and I can’t take in any more new material (that’s one hour, give or take). The bad news is that I’ve only been doing one hour. The good news is that so far, I’ve gotten to page 185 in the textbook (I’m skipping through a lot of exercises). I may not turn up much business, but I do have a plan:
1. Do at least one hour a day and finish the first volume.
2. Start with the second volume on the same schedule.
3. Flyer at appropriate intervals.
4. If I get clients, I will keep going through the textbooks that the college Russian instructors use. I’ll try to keep working on this until the end of fall 2011. If it doesn’t take off by then, I don’t think it will.
Writing a book is different, of course, because you probably do need a lot of the books you have at home. Home is very problematic, though, as a work location, because it’s got all the other stuff you usually do, lists for other stuff, laundry, dishes, a kitchen with yummy snacks, etc. And then there’s the whole internet issue, which is hard to get away from, because you probably need the internet for your research.

Fiction or Gardening….that’s what I’ll reward myself with if the baby ever goes to sleep this afternoon!…K

I work from home on Fridays. For some reason, working from home requires more rewards than the other four days, when I am stuck in a bland cubicle in the office.
My rewards: Jellybeans. A game of Bejeweled. An order from Boden. But that last one gets expensive…

Pedi! I’ve got to write a few more paragraphs, and then I’m heading out for a pedicure. This is a “sometimes” reward–and necessary because I have to put on some strappy sandals for a southern wedding this weekend. But I vowed not to sink into luxury til I finish writing. Of course might be toting the damn blue booklets I haven’t graded yet.

I’d vote for chocolate or an Americano at an excellent indi coffee place. Or BOTH chocolate and an Americano…

Cooking, some netflixed Gilmore Girls, and not making myself go to a semi-social, semi-work related event this evening. I’ve graded 60 papers and 15 exams in the last 7 days.
Chocolate is a staple rather than a reward. But I did get a blueberry scone from the coffee shop.

I reward myself with sleep. And last night’s Community, a show that has such moments of brilliance.

There is (or was) a place in Portland OR that offered bacon milkshakes. If you can drink the whole thing, you get it for free.
