White House Workplace Flexibility Forum.

The White House is having a conference on work-place flexibility. I'm watching it online RIGHT NOW. (3/31/10 2:00PM) Dooce is there, btw.

I've been at too many of these policy panels. Lots of talking. No evidence or data to back up statements. No plan to improve situations. Correction, no realistic plans to improve situations. The average age of the women on this panel is 60; they haven't changed a diaper in three decades. They are professional conference attenders.

  1. I’m with you. The dialogue on this stuff is mentally exhausting, particularly when very little to no change comes out of it.
The entire discussion on the matter can be summed up in one phrase — “Europe does it better.”

  2. That’s disheartening. I’m fortunate in that I have a fairly flexible workplace and schedule so I could spend a fair bit of the last two days on the phone with five different people (and counting), just attempting to find out what needs to be done to get autistic youngest her computer at the school for next year. Apparently we might now have the right information to get the letter that will support our application for the request to be funded.

  3. Oh, you were obviously aware of Dooce. Were the people invited (like her) not part of the discussion so they could bring a fresh perspective to the 60 y.o. ladies?

  4. I like Dooce but I sure hope they are talking to parents with jobs more typical and less flexible than “freelance blogger.”
