National Academic Standards

After each state spent millions of dollars coming up with their own set of academic standards, we've finally got a draft of a nation-wide set of standards. While the education goals seem to be pretty mushy, it's better than nothing and certainly better than 50 different systems. This initiative came from the National Governors' Association, rather than the Department of Education, which is problematic.

Interesting commentary at the New York Times.

  1. I’m not sure why one “mushy” system is better than 50 different systems, especially here in New Jersey, which has one of the (if not the) best public school system in the county.

I see the advantages of offering a national model — maybe even a national floor — but for states that have a better system that has “better” goals, why in uniformity superior?
