Online Philanthropy

Givology is a website where you can donate money directly to needy individuals abroad. Nicholas Kristof mentioned it in a tweet today. I hope the Internet can be used effectively to increase donations to great groups and causes.

  1. I’m a big fan of http://www.donorschoose.com. I like the model, and it’s a good model for teaching about giving to my kids, who are very sensitive, and can’t handle the more serious stories of loss and deprivation. And, unlike other models (heifer project, etc.), at donors choose, the thing you gave towards is actually purchased for the school. It’s not an example of something that *could* be given, but the actual item. Then, real students write real thank you letters, closing the loop. My daughter helped us pick out “Time for Kids” for a classroom, and very much enjoyed the thank you letters. The letters and the item were also very accessible to her; she could understand the kids and what they got out of what she’d given, and didn’t feel superior about being the giver.
(I have occasional angst about the model, because I really think that schools should be supported by taxes, not begging. But, the net always comes out to supporting it )
