I'm nearly done with a conference paper. I have Steve's blue pencil edits on my desk. Those edits need to be plugged in and the bibliography needs serious attention, but that paper is mostly cooked. I could keep editing and rewriting, but the paper just feels cooked enough right now. After I get feedback, I will probably feel differently. In the meantime, I'm making plans for the last two weeks of the summer.
I've got my seven different tabs open on my desk. There's one for the art opening that we going to tonight. (Must call the babysitter and get her here 1/2 an hour earlier than planned.)
The APSA conference website is up there. My parents have decided that they want to go, too, last minute and are having trouble finding a hotel room.
We're leaving Friday morning for Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A friend is having a party to celebrate her second marriage at her parents' You-Pick-It blueberry farm. I'm dressing the boys in white shirts. Mistake?
I have maps of the journey from Northern NJ to Portsmouth up on the computer. I'm looking for a cool place to have lunch and a walk-about at the halfway mark. Any suggestions?
After I make the phone calls and make some stacks of clothes for the trip, I'm wisking the boys off to the swim club for exercise and sun.
It feels good to be away from the computer and doing things.

LOL, apparently the midway point is my ex-boyfriend’s hometown, according to Mezzoman. Your best bet might be the Sturbridge area. Lots of restuarants/gift shop type things there. Easy on, easy off, IIRC.
Meanwhile, I have broken my ankle right in the middle of my Cape Cod vacation. Damned bike path (it was a bicycling accident). Reflections on the impossibilities of nursing a major injury (it’s my right ankle–I can’t drive) while parenting will be forthcoming on my blog.

Ouch. That’s why I never exercise.

At least there wasn’t a car involved. I feel anxious on behalf of the street cyclists I know because it seems like every serious cyclist winds up having at least one nasty accident involving a car. Stay safe out there, people.

It was the Cape Cod Bike Trail, so no one to blame but myself. Kids and bikes and near-darkness do not mix (we had lights, ftr, but lights are more to make sure cars and other bikes can see you, not to help you figure out where to turn).

You could detour to Springfield for the basketball hall of fame if that floats the family boats.

Portsmouth is awesome. There’s lots of good eats and walking around there — not that you’re looking for that, though. If you decide to do Worcester, try Shrewsbury St. for the interesting restaurants — should be fine even for kids for lunch. (Also easy off, easy on.) Worcester’s not going to impress your NYC kids though. If you want to spend money, they might like the Higgins Armory, which is full of armor.

I just went to Portsmouth and then two weeks later, Maine from Philly, so I’m so familiar with the route. I don’t know anything about it…mean to check it out, but I always see signs for Dinosaur State Park just south of Hartford. I have two boys that might find this really cool someday. If it’s a cool place…
Brace yourself for the Mass Tpk. Meh. Or maybe I just hit it all the wrong times.

Oh yeah! We went to Dinosaur State Park once. It’s just a little off your path. IIRC, there is a nice walking path area as well as the indoors exhibits, which we liked. That might be a good choice.

Thanks a ton, guys. Great suggestions that have all been printed out. It 10:30 and I just got back from NYC. I haven’t packed yet, so I better get moving. Back to blogging on Sunday.
