Midweek Journal

After Jonah and Ian were packed off on school buses with kisses and salami sandwiches, I sat at the computer to catch up on annoying chores. The first order of business was figuring out who owed me money.

From time to time, advertisers ask if they can put up ads on the blog. I usually ignore those requests, but over Christmas break, I spent a day figuring out how much to charge, setting up a PayPal account, reading pro-blogging websites, and setting up forms. I came up with some rates for three months and people actually gave me money. It was cool. But I didn't have time to keep track of who owed me what, and I never sent out invoices again in April.

Google ranks all websites with a mysterious algorithm. If you have a good number, then you move quickly to top of any google search. A few months ago, I had a great google PR, but the google changed the algorithm and my PR dropped. I can't charge enough to bother with all that hassle, so I'm losing the ads.

This blog has always been a slacker operation. I've had too much on my plate to do much more, but I've been toying with the idea of upgrading. I would make the content more consistent and fix up the design again. I've also thought about going back to the old name "Apartment 11D" and getting a domain name. Not sure if it's the best use of my time.

The six hours that the kids are in school always seem to fly by. Invoices for blog and other writing services, gym, theory grades submitted, a run to CVS. I also arranged the drinking plans for tomorrow.

After Ian gets home, I'm going to pick up Jonah from school and drive into Manhattan. I'll meet Steve outside his building and leave the kids with him. I'll meet up with another blogger at a bar a few blocks away. When Steve's finishes showing the kids Toys R Us and feeding them at Virgil's, he'll scoop me up and we'll drive back to New Jersey. Not as easy as it used to be, but we can work it out.

I am supposed to be simplifying my life. My babysitter tells me that I should visualize one goal and then it will just magically happen. I don't know about the magic thing, but I am spread too thinly right now and could clear some nonsense off my desk. Next nonsense to be cleared — one last set of papers to grade.

  1. Domain name should be easy enough, but why back to the old name?
Simplifying is easier in the summertime. Or at least, that’s what I’m trying to tell myself as I trudge through the last weeks of the school year.

  2. I like Apartment 11D, the archival blog, because it’s great journal of how you got here from there. I guess going back to the old name would be ’cause 11D isn’t available? or makes more sense when it’s attached to Apartment?
