Ian insisted on wearing a Viking hat to school today. Running out of the house for the school bus, I tried to convince him to wear his Cars baseball cap instead, but he said no. He felt strongly about being a Viking for the day.

When my daughter was 7, for a time she insisted on wearing an old pair of my eyeglass frames (lenses removed) and a big paisley scarf knotted at her neck like a cape. EVERYWHERE. I loved watching her interpret people’s stares as admiration rather than curiosity/surprise.
