I’ve never seen the Kinks, but funnily enough my wife (who was distinctly non-anglophile, and still is to be honest) went to see them when she was in high school. Her friend ran on stage and kissed Ray Davies. They must be about the same age as you. Odd, really, since most of the Kinks fans are over 60.

The Kinks were the first band I saw in high school and then I saw them a couple of other times in college. They were doing the big stadium tours in jersey at the time. They made a lot of money out of teenagers.

Laura, the Kinks were the first band I saw, too (well, I also saw Barry Manilow before that). I must have seen them at Nassau Coliseum, probably on the same tour you saw them at … hee, I bet it was called Meadowlands then. 😉
I know my dad went with me (he is way cooler about music than I am–he’s the one who introduced me to Springsteen, Blondie, and Patti Smith in the 70s/80s). I should ask him if he remembers it.

I think that the Kinks were the Jonas brothers of the early 80s. A harmless perky band; parents didn’t mind dropping off their teenage girls at the Meadowlands (and, yes, it was the meadowlands) to see them. At least it wasn’t Van Halen, they thought, the other big stadium band at the time.

Wait a sec, it isn’t called the Meadowlands anymore? I drove there from CT twice to see Springsteen once. (The first time we got rained out.)

I used to have an airline barf bag that was autographed by most of Van Halen. Unused, I hasten to add.

It was 1986, which the infallible(tm) Wikipedia tells me was Sammy.
I had been doing something completely different the night before, but apparently there was only one commercial flight out of Biloxi, Mississippi on Sunday mornings in that period. And for whatever reason VH didn’t fly charter.

OMG, Laura, I just asked my dad if he remembered the Kinks concert, and he said we went to Jersey to see them! So we were probably at the same concert back in 81 or whenever that was. 🙂
It’s a small world after all.
