In today’s Times, Angelina Jolie talks about kids and work. I haven’t been a huge fan. She always seemed to be more lips than talent. But I did come out liking her more after reading this piece.
Jolie has a couple of movies coming out that I would actually like to see. She’s working with Clint, which gives her major street cred. And it also sounds like she’s really into her kids. I do like that.
As the article goes on, it gives little hints about how she manages a huge family and a huge career. She has an assistant that comes in to tell her it’s pumping time. She can take off big chunks of time between movies. She has a staff to home school the older children. She takes the younger kids to the set with her. More staff involved. The kids eat every meal with both parents.
It’s useful to see how someone with an unlimited budget and huge cheek bones can make things work. Sure, we mortals could never take three small kids with us to work, but now it’s not completely off the table.

The only thing that I question is how she has become the mothering version of models in magazines. And whether by her design or not, she makes very little overt mention of the support she has in staff and nannies to pull this off.
Similar to how the mag images ignore the botox/good genes/lighting/make-up/photoshop/trainers/personal chefs/plastic surgeons and imply that we can achieve the same level of beauty on our own steam.
Somehow celebrity mom photos never seem to show the team of nannies/staff that make it all possible. And again, we “civilians” should be able to do the same – not only look fab but now have the perfect family as well.
I imagine that more celebrities rather than fewer do parenting a la Sharon Stone of “botox you son’s feet” fame.
