Question of the Day – Pity Palin?

Question of the Day – Are you starting to feel sorry for Palin?

UPDATE:

“And I do look forward to Thursday night, and debating Senator Joe
Biden,’’ said Ms. Palin, whose uneven performance in interviews and
unscripted events have sown seeds of doubt in recent days among some
conservative commentators who support her.

“I’m looking forward to meeting him, too,’’ she said. “I’ve never
met him before, but I’ve been hearing about his Senate speeches since I
was in, like, second grade.’’

“I have to admit, though, he’s a great debater, and he looks pretty doggone confident, like he’s sure he’s going to win,…’

  1. “Thank you for thinking of me, Senator, but I really believe that the people of Alaska deserve a governor who is completely committed to serving them for a full term of office.”
    Also, “Abracapocus.”

  3. I feel sorry for her, in that she has made a jump that she was clearly not prepared for (both in the sense of not having had enough of the governing and life experience relevant to the position she’s in the running for, and–probably more importantly–in the sense of simply not having had enough time to intellectually and psychologically prepare herself for the jump). And, because of the unrewarding work and embarrassing attention she’s committed herself to, it’s going to have a difficult impact on her family and kids, and so I feel sorry for them. But ultimately, Doug got it right: she could have (should have) said no. She’s the one who committed to this.

  4. The trouble with Russell is that he is too decent a human being. I do feel sorry for her family. But not her. Either she is someone who is completely immune to experience, in which case she will not experience the humiliation that this is. Or she will, in which case she has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reflect on her life and her own standing in the world. Lucky her.
McCain, by contrast, has been exposed as a grasping and unprincipled twister, and a fool. In most years that would not matter, but this year the elctorate might think (and might just be right) that it has the opportunity to choose someone a bit different.

For a blast from the alternative universe we live in, go back and read Laura’s archives after the 2004 election (from November 2004). It’s scary. Remember how much hope and trust we had in the American voter then? All I can say is that we need to fight for every single vote. Our world would be a different place if each of these elections had gone differently, and we’re facing the same challenge again.

  6. I have to admit feeling sorry for her. When I was watching her interview with Couric about foreign policy, I was actually thinking up responses that she should have given.
Couric: So what foreign policy experience do you have, Gov. Palin?
Palin: Well, I am governor of the fine state of Alaska. Traditionally, governors do not have responsibilities regarding foreign affairs. The constitution firmly gives that responsibility to the national government, as you know Katie. However, I do have somewhat more responsibility in this regard than the governors of Georgia and Arkansas. The people of America thought those governors were prepared enough to make the jump to national office. I have been involved in border security issues.
Couric: Have you ever negotiated any major treaties with a foreign nation?
Palin: Well, as you know Katie, negotiating treaties is a job given to the president. So, even seasoned Congressmen have not yet had that opportunity yet.
yada bs bs yada. She is so completely overwhelmed and underprepared. I just hate watching someone make an ass of themselves on television, even if I hate them.

As Smitty apologetically said in Spinal Tap, I’m just as God made me, sir. But thanks for saying so.

Yeah, with the last couple of interviews, Palin has moved into farce territory, and while some farces make me laugh, the sort that depend upon the humiliation of the subject usually don’t work for me. I just have to turn off the tv or leave the room; I can’t watch. The question is: will Palin get better, or will she, in some weird combination of Republican calculation and self-immolating culture warfare, remain a farce until the bitter end?

  8. While on the whole I do not enjoy witnessing the humiliation of others, Sarah Palin chose to expose herself to the experience. So no, I do not feel sorry for her. I just turn the television off.
The question is: will Palin get better,
I very much doubt it. To perform in a manner that would not be an embarrassment would take years of study and thinking, not days of swotting.
or will she, in some weird combination of Republican calculation and self-immolating culture warfare, remain a farce until the bitter end?
The likely course, unless she takes several hints batted her way and withdraws “for family reasons.”
However, I doubt that will happen: I doubt Palin is aware how miserably she is performing and the “don’t blink” mantra.

  9. Think about all her anti-feminist, scary creepy conservative positions, Laura, and you’ll have less trouble with your reaction. She is awful, she is unqualified, and John McCain should be ashamed for making putting “election first” in making this desperate choice.

  10. I can’t be the only one who’s looking forward to the Palin-Biden debate for all of the wrong reasons. Between the two of them, there is some real potential for something memorable.

  11. MH, I’m looking forward to it for the same reasons, and if they’re wrong, I don’t wanna be right.
I’ve moved from the bargaining, anger, and depression phases into the “OMG this is a circus!” phase. Pass the popcorn.

  12. I’ve been telling my students for a week or so that the vice-presidential debate is going to be craptastic. I can’t wait to see not just Palin striving mightily not to be a fool, but also Biden tying himself in knots trying to not say something that the right will be able to present (probably accurately) as being condescending and sexist.

“Sarah Palin is ruining my life”
I rant about her; I can’t stop thinking about her; I cannot stand to look at her; I’m possessed by her!
