Last night’s Democratic debate was a rare treat. The candidates were clearly exhausted. Hillary had on a gallon of undereye concealer, along with a sharp green shirt and a rare girly necklace. The others just looked saggy.
Perhaps because of this exhaustion and the Iowa upset, things got a little nasty last night. Nasty makes for good TV.
Hillary is clearly ticked off about all the good press that Obama is getting. She made little digs about that nice words and pretty sentiment don’t mean anything. The media is lapping up Obama’s last speech in Iowa like it’s cheap beer at a kegger. Hillary is Dean Wormer at this kegger.
Edwards said it’s Obama and me against the status-quo. In passive aggressive language, status quo would be Hillary. We should have had subtitltes for this debate for those not versed in passive aggressive language. Edwards reminded everyone that he came in second in Iowa. Hillary stiffened up when Edwards said this. I mean even more than usual.
Change. Change. Change. Change. Hillary – I’m experienced change.
Someone should tell Edwards to say something other than Washington lobbyists are bad. Edwards also said about a hundred times that his parents worked in a mill; I am one of you. When I’m president, everyone will have a 30,000 square foot house in North Carolina.
Obama is goin’ for the Camelot thing. He’s playing well with young voters. He’s charming. Pretty wife. Young kids. He did very well last night. During a commercial break, I switched over to Fox where they were chatting with undecided voters. They were hating Hillary that night. Many of Hillary’s old supporters were switching to the Obama camp.
Last night, Hillary said that change never comes from nice words that stir up the public. She said that words are not action. It’s comes from experience of dealing with the system. Obama responded,
Look, I think it’s easier to be cynical and just say, "You
know what, it can’t be done because Washington’s designed to resist
change." But in fact there have been periods of time in our history
where a president inspired the American people to do better, and I
think we’re in one of those moments right now. I think the American
people are hungry for something different and can be mobilized around
big changes — not incremental changes, not small changes….

truth is actually words do inspire. Words do help people get involved.
Words do help members of Congress get into power so that they can be
part of a coalition to deliver health care reform, to deliver a bold
energy policy. Don’t discount that power, because when the American
people are determined that something is going to happen, then it
happens. And if they are disaffected and cynical and fearful and told
that it can’t be done, then it doesn’t. I’m running for president
because I want to tell them, yes, we can. And that’s why I think
they’re responding in such large numbers.

The primary season depresses me because I like all of the candidates and hate the idea of any of them losing.
Have you seen “The Great Debaters” (movie starring Denzel Washington) yet? It makes the same point as Obama–that words are power. And it calls back to that time where words mattered. James Farmer, one of the debaters in the movie, founded CORE, which means words did translate into action and into social change.
We’re going to see a lot of young people watching that movie, btw. It’s a dream movie for anyone teaching persuasive writing or early 20th century American history. I just sent my persuasive writing students a juicy extra credit assignment based on the movie, and I sure hope it’s out on DVD by next term (we’re on a trimester system) so I can simply show it to my classes.

BJ- it sure seemed like Edwards was setting himself up for the VPspot on the potential Obama ticket in the debate. I was shocked by how obviously he sided with Obama. But I think Barack would need someone with a lot more experience than Edwards- maybe Richardson.
But it’s early yet. I’m struck by how different everyone’s view of the debate was. I am an Obama supporter and I thought he did Ok but that Edwards won last night with more passion and clear points. I ‘ve also seen people who thought HRC won and some who thought she lost it all last night. Lots of diverse interpretations and personal impressions. That’s what makes this all so interesting. I love primary season.

Why would Obama want Edwards? Another senator, and one who has specialized in red-meat class antagonism during the primary. Obama clearly thinks red-meat class antagonism is not the way to win the general. Also, Edwards has shown himself to be out for himself, utterly lacking any loyalty to Kerry, who chose him for the Veep spot before – wouldn’t Obama want someone who at least hasn’t DEMONSTRATED an absolute out-for-himself style? I would think he would want a governor or mayor – Richardson has persistent skirt-chasing rumors dogging him and is not a particularly swell speaker. Rendell? Bredesen? Warner?

I find myself wondering if Hillary won’t end up to be one of those long-serving senators who actually run much of the government, without ever capturing the white house itself. Her emphasis on nuts and bolts sets her more in that direction.
I am torn on the Obama thing. How could a person not be inspired by what happened in Iowa? But I am just not convinced that he can translate it into actual change.
I talked to my 65-year-old parents — Iowa democrats both, both of whom caucused on Tuesday. They came away with an interesting perspective. They said their caucus was overwhelmed by new, young people. (In Iowa this is a statement; it’s really Grandma-land in Iowa.) And those young people were pretty forthrightly saying, all you older folks have totally screwed up this country. And we know we have to clean it up for you. And we would like you to please get out of the way now, so we can at least get on with it. My mother was very humbled by all of this, and was talking about how maybe it is time to turn over the reins. Wow.
And so then I think, even though I’m only 39, maybe I am too old and cynical to deal with this. Maybe we need a new guy who’s so green he doesn’t even know to be scared.

That sounds really obnoxious. And false, too. It’s not as if things had been perfect at some particular point in the past and the WWII generation and the Boomers screwed it up. Although, looking at Social Security and the credit bubble, I have some limited sympathy with the young folks’ position. (Speaking of which, what bad luck that many Boomers’ main retirement plan was to sell their home, downsize, and live on the proceeds.)

Amy, no one is saying things were perfect in the past. It’s like my house. It’ll never be perfectly clean. But you can tell when it’s trashed.
This country has been trashed. I don’t know that I trust the “younger” generation to do it (college-aged kids taking over? I’d shudder in fear if I really thought they could tear themselves away from their cellphones long enough), but I don’t know that I trust the old guard either.

Well, Amy, I see what you’re saying there. But honestly we’ve done such a terrible job in the last few years that I don’t think we can exactly argue for the elders.
And remember, although the young people were phrasing it in terms of age, it’s really about building new centers of power. That can work. I’m a more, ahem, seasoned person, and I’ve joined startups to help apply better process. There’s a huge difference between taking a new firm and applying some best practices, and trying to get an established firm with some best practices in place to change the rest of its ways. I would imagine the experience translates to the political world.

And while I think of it, DC summer interns (who are presumably the idealistic, energetic go-getters who are going to run the country some day) also tend to leave devastation in their wake, leaving much of a theoretically ritzy neighborhood looking pretty slummy with move-in and move-out debris. I don’t think one can reasonably expect a whole lot from college-educated people under 30, even if they are ideologically committed to being responsible and community-minded–those ideals don’t necessarily translate into removing the remains of last weekend’s party from the stoop.

Yeah, I don’t really think that college kids are going to fix the world. But, I am immeasurably uplifted by the idea that they think they can, rather than thinking they can’t. So, I found Jen’s report of her parent’s Iowa experience heart warming, in spite of also thinking the young ‘uns are obnoxious. Hasn’t one of the problems of the last decade been the perception that young people think both that their elders have screwed up, but also that there’s nothing they can do about it?

Prior to civil rights blacks had their own press. In the absence of civil rights these entities would have grown into legitimate media outlets serving the black community.
Maintaining segregation would have produced economic entities which arose from within the black community to fill the demand for goods and services.
