Jonah turns eight today. I climbed up his bunk this morning and told him the story about how he punched the doctor in the nose when he was born. Then we took him back to our little apartment in the city during the hottest summer ever. He loves that story. So, I’m busy planning weekend festivities. We may take a ferry ride from New Jersey to downtown Manhattan tomorrow for hotdogs in Battery Park.
Question of the Day: What are your weekend plans?

Your oldest is exactly 7 years older than my youngest. We will spend the weekend watching “first steps” are thinking its cute when a big piece of cake gets shoved into a very tiny face.

We are going strawberry picking in the lovely state of Wisconsin. And then making smoothies and jam when we get home. (We may stop for a brat and some cheese in between.)
I love this time of year!

Our daughter’s 8th birthday party is Sunday (albeit a month in advance of her actual birthday). Are you making Jonah a party? Do you have to deal with a keep-up-with-the-Joneses syndrome re: parties?

My folks are visiting us–the first time our girls will have seen my parents on anything besides their own turf in years. They’re very excited. Mom and Dad will stay for five days, and I’m sure we’ll spend a fair amount of time at their hotel’s swimming pool. But there will also be golf for a Dad and me, and perhaps a trip to the zoo for us all. And I’m delighted to have discovered that Kansas does have fireflies after all! So we’re all looking forward to a good weekend.

I’ll be doing the same thing I do every day – working on my thesis. I am one month away from deadline and I am starting to have panic attacks. But I am glad to hear about everyone elses plans 🙂

I’m checking in from my 20th college reunion. After a hot humid day yesterday, it’s cooled off so much that my husband took the kids to get some sweaters while I stayed and chatted with old friends at breakfast. We plan to climb the clock tower and go to a carnival on the quad this afternoon.
My daughter turns 8 in a couple of weeks. I remember this weekend 8 years ago! My mom and sisters held a baby shower for me, outdoors, and I was so hot I thought I was going to die. I just sat in a chair like a very round beached whale and people speculated I’d go into labor any minute. 🙂

We’re in the middle of yet another phase of house projects. Goal for the weekend: sanding and painting the front porch and stairs, sanding on living room wall in preparation for priming, and sanding our staircase in preparation for a coat of polyurethane. Done already: sanding the stairs.
Tomorrow I’m going to vacuum out my car, mow the lawn, and then in the afternoon/evening we’re having a backyard party for a friend flying in from LA.

What good plans. I’m glad you remember how hot it was that summer eight years ago, Wendy. I just sat in our one air conditioned room breast feeding and recovering from a botched c-section.
Yes, we had an extended party for Jonah today, Dr. Manhattan. I’m recovering from it now and will have to put off a longer post until tomorrow morning. We’re getting better at juggling children and entertaining, so it was a good day.
The film festival sounds great, RC. You know I do have that little crush on Jon Stewart.
Carrie, how you made progress on your thesis. How many weekends have I spent at the computer? Many.
It’s fun to see how many of us had family picnics and parties this weekend. We’ll have to have a recipe swap for side dishes next Friday.

end-of-season parties on the driveway for both the baseball and soccer teams. little charred bits of dead animal. potato salad. speeches about how utterly swell the coaches have been (and they have – as a lifetime dweeb, I am immensely grateful to these athletic guys who are giving my guys stuff I really cannot). birthday party for #2. it is absolutely amazing how much noise seventeen nine-year-olds make. the dads sat around and drank beer and talked about orthopedic surgery and the real estate price crash. we’re all getting on.

I also remember how brutally hot the summer of 1999 was.
Our idea of recipes for the party was pizza from the local pizzeria & an ice cream cake from Baskin-Robbins. Much hilarity ensued when the cake was too deep-frozen for me to cut.
