The Movies of the Summer

The movies that have really taken off for elementary school kids this summer aren’t the big budget Cars or Over the Hedge. It’s a couple of Disney, low-budget flicks.

All the girls are crazy for High School Musical, which wasn’t even released in theaters. It was a TV movie. My nieces know all the words to the score and organize dance parties with their friends.

Jonah is wild about Sky High, a Kurt Russell film about the son of the strongest man in the world. Major nostalgia factor for the parents, including an alternative 80s soundtrack.

  1. Snap. Exactly those two movies have been what my kids have gravitated to (Girl 14, boy 9) in the last few weeks. We’re in Melbourne, which is SE Australia, so those movies seem to have achieved pretty good worldwide coverage. Probably net influence there.

  2. Sky High was last summer but my girls still love it. Youngest wants to listen to the soundtrack over and over.
High School Musical fills me with annoyance because I can’t find a copy to rent for blood nor money. Looks like I’ll have to buy the DVD in order for eldest to see it!
But I can’t point fingers as I’ve rediscovered my Superman fandom with the release of Superman Returns.

  3. My kids will not watch movies. I swear. It’s the weirdest thing. They won’t go to movies, and they won’t watch them on tv. My 7 year old says they’re “too scary” and now has her 4 yo brother saying the same. Of course, they were both flipped out by Magic School Bus this morning. so maybe it is too scary for them.
I’ve watched about 30 minutes of High School Musical via alternative methods. I just never get around to sitting and watching the whole thing.

  4. I haven’t seen High School Musical, yet, either. I think it’s a girl thing, but I’ve heard that it has grossed millions. It was apparently a huge error to release it on TV instead of theaters.
Sky High was last year? The seven year old set around here is just discovering it. They’re a little late to the party, I guess.
I’m amused by the low budgetness of the films. They are totally in the tradition of Disney’s old Sunday night movies. But this time they have a Cure soundtrack. Cool.

  5. Waiting to go see “How to Eat Fried Worms” in 2 weeks for my 10-year old’s birthday party. An adaptation of the Thomas Rockwell 1970s book. I am hoping it is as good as the book and hoping that they injected some fun into it for adults as well as kids.

  6. The movie we were most disappointed in was Monster House. Definitely thought it deserved a PG -13 rating. It’s an animated horror movie for older kids. PG was too mild a rating in my opinion. We also LOVED Sky High!
