Question of Day

In a recent post, Tim Burke writes about how he greatly enjoys his little handiwork about the house. My husband is still purring from some electrical work he did in the attic. And I smile everytime I go into our newly painted and decorated office. My little pots of herbs on the driveway make me dream up new dishes, so that I can cook them up.

We all have an inner Martha that gets great contentment from doing things about the home.

Question of the Day: Show me your inner Martha. Are you proud of any recent home projects?

  1. I guess neatly labeling a bunch of file folders doesn’t count, does it? And filling our summer with Everyday Food dinners probably doesn’t count either. I was thinking of mowing the lawn in a lovely plaid pattern, the damn thing is growing so much. And I still plan to put up that towel rack in the downstairs bathroom.
Geez, my inner Martha might be crying out for help.

  2. Does cooking count?
I am always very pleased when I cook a good meal. The most recent was last weekend–I made Pork Chops with liver (my modification of a Marcella Hazan recipe), Spaghetti with summer squash, and cherry cobbler.

  3. Wheee!!! I’m so glad you asked. I’ve been having a blast this summer. My big project was planning my 7 year old’s birthday party. I’m not to good at posting links, but this should be direct to the photo of the cake I made? Photo
My other project is to paint my son’s room. I wasn’t sure what to do for a while. I’ve been removing a Classic Pooh border from the walls, but now I’ve finally decided to paint the room a greenish-blue and maybe texture it a little with white to make it look somewhat sea-like. And then I’ll get stick-on wall decor of ocean creatures. I really want to paint a big beluga whale, but my talents don’t run that far.
I’m also gardening a little. Everything’s barely grown, but I definitely have zinnias, marigolds, and morning glories, as well as some swiss chard. Wish me luck on my squash and lavender.

  4. Hrrm, Martha can’t touch me: I actually completely remodeled my bathroom (down to the wall studs and floor joists-pictures including work-in-progress at http://snippy.livejournal.com/62446.html#cutid1) a couple of years ago. That is, a friend and I took a week off work and did it all, except for the electrical and a bit of plumbing. Recently we’ve been painting the interior. I also used AutoCAD last month to design a new landscape plan for the back yard–not that we can afford to do the work yet.

  5. It’s only a small thing, but I converted two 14-inch deep drawrs in our kitchen to a 4-inch deep one at the top and a 10-inch-deep one underneath it, using a drawer flatpack that was too big and needed to be cut down to size. It’s amazing the difference it made — suddenly the things in the upper drawer are at natural hand height and cooking involves half the bending over it used to. It still makes me smile when I come into the kitchen.

  6. We bought a little above-ground pool from Walmart – round, 12 foot diameter, 40″ high. And I’ve made a deck around it, and the kids happily do cannon-balls, great splashing merriment. That’s my equivalent.
