Really Important Question

We’re finally going to get ourselves a proper bed.  For years, we’ve been sleeping on a mattress and boxspring with the cheap metal frame that came with the mattress.  Which was fine, until the movers got their hands on it.  They folded our boxspring in half like an ice cream sandwich in order to get it up the stairs.  This involved sawing.  Now the whole bed is majorly sagging.  We need to either toss the boxspring and get a platform bed or get a proper base and headboard.  Maybe even put a brace on the boxspring.

Are platform beds uncomfortable without the boxspring?  Do platform beds look cooler?  Platform or Boxspring?

  1. We had a platform bed for years and loved it. When we moved to Mass. we had to get rid of the platform bed because we couldn’t get it up the stairs. We slept on a mattress on the floor for months before I rebelled and insisted we get a split boxspring and a metal frame.
Right now the bed is the least of my concerns, but down the line I wouldn’t mind getting a nice bed.

  2. We have a gorgeous Danish teak bed that has slats that sort of act like a platform. It was plenty comfortable for a while. We figured that maybe our mattress needed replacing. We decided to take our old mattress and put it in our guest room (the guest room bed has a box spring) and we bought ourself an extremely expensive Stearns and Foster mattress.
Unfortunately for us the new, extremely expensive mattress wasn’t any more comfortable than the old one and now the best bed in the house is the guest room bed. The plus side is that our guests are always extremely well rested.
We’re selling the gorgeous teak Danish bed my husband bought before we were married and getting a regular bed that requires a box spring.
I wouldn’t do a platform mostly because I think mattresses are designed to work best with box springs.

  3. 1. Foam Rubber on a platform. Real foam rubber. expensive, but lasts for years, years, years. Comfortable.
    2. second choice: a split box spring, they even make them for queens.

  4. so do you have to get a special mattress for a platform bed? I can’t use the one I have now?
Things are getting worse. Spent the night on the sofa, because my back is killing me. A couple of more nights of sleeping on the sofa and Steve is going to toss that boxspring out the window.

  5. No opinion on the main question.
To make your bed temporarily sleepable, go to a lumberyard and get boards (I’d use 2X6’s for a queen or king) cut to the exact width of the bed frame. Put them every 12-16 inches, making a platform for the box spring. That will keep the box spring from sagging.
Alternatively, just put the box spring and mattress on the floor.

  6. I wouldn’t part with my platform bed. Of course, it’s probably the most expensive piece of furniture I have. I use a soft foam-filled futon for a mattress. And there is a drawer built into the platform for underbed storage.

  7. We recently were bed shopping (five years married and couldn’t stand the cozy double any more). My understanding from the mattress people’s spiel is that the boxspring is mostly to preserve the mattress, not to make the people more comfy. If you want a platform look with box spring function, check out charlesprogers.com–they have beds (see the Mondrian) that have the compartment for the box spring just a couple inches above the floor, so the look is totally platform. Of course then you lose that handy underbed storage space, but don’t you folks in the suburbs have attics and basements and sheds in the yard?

  8. Neither. Get thee to the local mall and try out a Select Comfort bed. The hype on the TV commercials is unbearable but the bed really is amazing. Particularly if there is a significant weight difference between you and your partner.

  9. I have to laugh when I think of the beds we endured early in our marriage. We had a low-quality platform bed for while when I was in grad school where the plasterboard ridge for holding the platform in place started to fall apart and so we had to get on the bed simultaneously or the mattress would flip up to one side or the other. We actually put up with that for two months because we didn’t have the money for a replacement. Or the Crate and Barrel monstrosity we got at one point–a sort of hollow metal frame that looked as sturdy as all get out but was basically about as tough as aluminum foil.
Anyway, a while back we just got a really sound box spring and a fantastic mattress. We didn’t spend a huge amount but we didn’t go cheap either.

  10. Laura, when we sold our platform bed, I think we kept the mattress and still sleep on it. Man, we’ve had some 12 years on this mattress.

  11. Having recently relocated I was forced to buy a new mattress. WOW. I bought the mattress and box spring incredibly slept-deprived with little cash in my pocket. The new mattresses have this “pillow technology.” Yowza! I LOVE my new bed. My old roomie had the same type of mattress, and I remember sleeping on her bed and letting a guest use my bed–it was so difficult to go back. I can’t say much for a platform bed, but I’m a traditionalist when it comes to beds. You can come up here and try mine out : )

  13. Some great links here! Having suffered back pain myself for many years, and tried some ‘expensive’ mattreses, I am keen to look further at the foam mattresses. Unfortunately, I am in the UK, so the supply offered here can’t help me, but it is food for thought!

  17. Today one of the major concern is that we never go ourselves with a proper bed. Since years we have been sleeping with the mattress and box spring which have low costs. We figured out that our guest room needs some modification , so we bought platform beds. Now the question is that are the Platforms beds were uncomfortable without box springs?
