Over the weekend, a reader e-mailed me to let me know about a new book, Roots of Desire, which discusses the common stereotypes of redheads. The review was in Sunday’s Times.
But beware: though red hair is alluring, it also carries a hint of devilry.
That dichotomy is explored engagingly by Roach, the NPR commentator, in ”The Roots of Desire,” a book mixing history, science and self-discovery, though it’s pegged to a somewhat exaggerated premise. ”That redheads are untrustworthy, fiery, unstable, hot-tempered, highly sexed, rare creatures is what passes for common knowledge today,” writes Roach, a redhead herself. ”While we no longer burn them at the stake, we still carry potent, inflammatory beliefs about their power.”
After my water broke a week early with my second son, I waited for my doctor to show up at the hospital to do my c-section. As I paced around to ease the contractions and to calm my nerves, another doctor came over to talk. I had thrown a my hissy fit a month or two before when I had to wait too long for my RH- shot, and I guess this impressed him that I was a typical redhead. So, while I was in labor, he proceeded to tell me about every crazy thing that his former redheaded girl friend had done. Um, sorry, I’m a little busy now.
So what’s truth, dear redheaded blogger? Do you fit the redhead myth?
There’s really only one response to such a question…
Shut up and stop bothering me with such silly questions. Now, come closer so that you can better adore me.

Are red-headed traits/stereotypes gender specific? The redhead I know the best (male) is also one of the calmest, most rational people I know. Perhaps he’s repressing himself.

If you have a little red head in charge, it is a good idea to slurp on the sun screen:

for that matter, if you ARE a red head, it is a good idea to slurp on the sun screen.

Every redheaded woman i’ve known has had that fiery personality that is often associated with being a redhead. That’s what attracts a lot of guys to them, they’re very passionate.

I am a natural redhead. I didn’t realize that I was a stereotypical redhead until several people pointed it out. I had always thought I was just me. I pride myself in being stubborn, having my mind set, and I do have a slight temper… that’s putting it lightly I have an ENORMOUS temper, and I don’t like when people point out the fact that I argue with everything and say I guess it’s just because your a redhead, like I should try and fix that problem. I’m proud of my hair color and I wouldn’t trade it for the average blonde who has more fun or the more mature brunette. Not that I have a problem with either of those colors I’m just more partial to mine.

I am a natural redhead. A lot of reds do have tempers and are outspoken, but a lot of the redheaded guys at my school are real quiet and nice….. it seems that all of us redheaded women are the ones that the stereotype fits!

I’m a natural redhead guy. I usually am pretty quiet and nice, which might cause me to explode when people take advantage or piss me off. When I’m pissed off I’ve taught myself to seclude myself. It doesn’t happen very often, but when I do get mad I can’t sleep because my adrenaline gets pumping and my heart rate raises to like 90-100 b/m resting, my face gets red and my muscles flare. The last time i got mad i almost passed out because I was somewhat dehydrated already, and I could hardly breathe. My brother is a redhead, he once hit me over the head with a log, shot me inside the house(with a bbgun), and attacked me after i walked past him when he was sleeping on the couch. Id like to say its something I can control, but its more like how I have to alter my lifestyle around it. It doesnt happen very often, but when it does, redhead guys can be very dangerous. I recommend being nice to them. 🙂
