What I’m Reading

On the Bedstand:
The Best American Essays 2004 (Best American Essays) I’m working my way through this book one essay per night. The book is my mint on my pillow.

Menand has picked out his favorites for the year. Last night, I was gripped by Laura Hillenbrand’s struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Also, fantastic was the lead essay in the book by Kathryn Chetkovich’s who writes of her envy of her more successful partner. She never names him, but I suspect she’s talking about Jonathan Franzen.

  1. I read through those Best American Essay collections like clockwork every year for a decade, 1990-1999. Then, for whatever reason, I stopped picking them up when they came out; I guess graduate school drove out my interest in the general essay for awhile. I ought to start back into reading them.
