I’m mostly ignoring my kids, who are still not at school yet (ughhhhh!) and trying to get work done on articles. I’m in research mode today for one piece and don’t have the brain space to write a full blog post. So, just some links today.

I’m fascinated with the market for Masters degrees. Might look at them next. In the meantime, here’s an article about MBAs. Looks like they are in trouble.

My college kid tried to sell his off-campus housing set up last year as a big cost saver. Not. Yeah, it was just a place to party in peace. Not a cost saver at all. Those landlords around college campuses must be making a fortune. The colleges, who depend on those shacks to house the overflow of students, need to monitor matters better.

Sometimes it’s best if college students are randomly assigned a roommate by the college, rather than going through the matchmaking garbage on Facebook ahead of time.

The number of kids in special ed in Flint, Michigan has skyrocketed. Because of lead. It’s the legacy of lead. Those poor babies were permanently damaged. Makes me sick. And now the schools aren’t prepared to teach them? If anybody deserves reparations, it’s those families.

  1. My husband brought S back to school on Wednesday, and E started today. I also brought my mom’s dog back to NY this weekend. At 10 am I was sitting in my house thinking, oh wow, I’m alone* for the first time since May!
    *Except for my elder dog.

We break even with the off-campus housing.

  2. This is our third week of school. The heat is finally starting to slack off a little, but it won’t be really comfortable for another month.

Our oldest continues to grind away at her college applications, a little at a time.

  3. That MBA article ought to say: “It’s Official: The FACE TO FACE MBA is in Crisis.” Because online MBA programs are flourishing. And it makes sense. Take U of Illinois – who wants to move to Champaign-Urbana for a couple of years when you could live at home, stay in your current job, and get your MBA from U of I in your spare time? I’m at a second/third tier MBA program, and our online MBA is doing great. Our face to face program is pretty much dead (because we have far fewer international students), but the growth in online more than makes up for it.

    1. I saw that. DeBlasio’s plan will certainly drive the remaining middle class (which for this purpose I define as extending up to $250K/year) out of the City. Tulip’s addendum would get rid of the upper class too.

        Just back from googling. Wow!

    1. If deBlasio passes that bill, my home value will triple overnight as all the UWS people run here. Sigh. On the one hand, home value up = good. On the other, people whining about Jersey bagels = bad.

        Funny!

Good timing for you if you want to downsize or move to a slightly less posh district.

      2. You should campaign for it. You could downsize to the city (property values will drop a little, not a lot) and put money in a trust. I don’t think he’ll get it passed.
