Beaching

I’m down the shore with the family this week. They are presently packing up to sit on the sand and ponder the great infinity of the ocean. I’m parked at the rental’s dining room table with my iPad that’s being forced to act like a laptop. Various beverages keep me company.

I’m working this morning on an article that I should have finished last week, but couldn’t cobble together enough consecutive hours to get it done. It’s okay. I really don’t want it to get published until the end of August anyway.

And it’s pretty amazing to write with a view of crashing waves in the background. Hamilton is on my headphones. Steve is entertaining the boys, so there’s no guilt.

We’re in a really cheesy rental with wood paneling and furniture from the early 1970s. Coming down here was a last minute plan, so we couldn’t be picky. Oddly, I enjoy the decor, because it reminds me of some of the dumps that my parents rented when we were kids in the 1970s. And the view is great, so the faded wallpaper isn’t important.

  1. Beach houses tend to be dated, at least in my experience. Especially if they end up being owned by multiple cousins. No one has the energy to redecorate; who wants to upset Great Aunt Alice? And the older relatives have a hard time adjusting to how much new furniture costs. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

You’re doing well if it isn’t moldy, and the washing machine isn’t scary.

  2. Some of the best times I’ve had have been renting a beach house. Unfortunately, I haven’t done that in a long time. 😦

  3. Did Jonah quit his job? Or did it not work out? I got fired from a restaurant job once; I think the owner thought a 25-year-old with no higher prospects would be a better dishwasher than a college student.

    1. Is it your view that the owner was wrong? Were your washed plates greasy? Did you break too many creamers? Asking for a friend.

    2. Neither. Jonah took off a few days to come down to the beach with us. We purposively vacationed nearby, so he could join us for part of the week. The boss wasn’t entirely pleased, so he might get fired when he gets back. Which wouldn’t be a terrible thing. He puts in 14 hour days three days per week and then 4-12 from Tuesday through Thursday. For minimum wage. It’s Jonah and the Guatemalans. He’s joined the local Mexican soccer league.

      1. To restaurant owner guy: NEVER, EVER THREATEN TO FIRE HIM AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!

It might happen, but I assure you that people have done way worse.

My sis hired a summer employee who swore on a heap of Bibles that she would work through the summer and then quit after three weeks.

      3. We had a person quit before starting because she got a better position after the acceptance and before her start date. I didn’t feel very mad at her about that, because ours was a temporary position without benefits and the other job was permanent and with benefits.
